Diatoms, an important group of phytoplankton, bloom annually in the Southern Ocean, covering thousands of square kilometers and dominating the region''s phytoplankton communities. In their role as the major food source to marine grazers, diatoms supply carbon, nutrients and energy to the Southern Ocean food web. Prevailing environmental conditions influence diatom phenotypic traits (for example, photophysiology, macromolecular composition and morphology), which in turn affect the transfer of energy, carbon and nutrients to grazers and higher trophic levels, as well as oceanic biogeochemical cycles. The paucity of phenotypic data on Southern Ocean phytoplankton limits our understanding of the ecosystem and how it may respond to future environmental change. Here we used a novel approach to create a ‘snapshot'' of cell phenotype. Using mass spectrometry, we measured nitrogen (a proxy for protein), total carbon and carbon-13 enrichment (carbon productivity), then used this data to build spectroscopy-based predictive models. The models were used to provide phenotypic data for samples from a third sample set. Importantly, this approach enabled the first ever rate determination of carbon productivity from a single time point, circumventing the need for time-series measurements. This study showed that Chaetoceros simplex was less productive and had lower protein and carbon content during short-term periods of high salinity. Applying this new phenomics approach to natural phytoplankton samples could provide valuable insight into understanding phytoplankton productivity and function in the marine system.  相似文献

A series of Rh(III) mixed ligand polypyridine type complexes have been prepared. Complexes of the form [Rh(L)2(L)]n+, where n=2/3, L=2,2-bipyridine (bpy)/1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and L=3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (Hpytr), 1-methyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (1M3pytr), 4-methyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (4Mpytr), 3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (Hbpt), 4-amino-3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (NH2bpt) and 3-(pyridin-2-yl)-5-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole (HPhpytr), have been prepared and their synthesis and characterisation are reported. Crystals of [Rh(bpy)2(Phpytr)](PF6)2 and [Rh(phen)2(NHbpt)](PF6)2 were obtained and their structures determined. Analysis of X-ray crystallographic data showed that coordination of the metal centre in [Rh(phen)2(NHbpt)](PF6)2 occurs via the amine moiety and a nitrogen of the pyridine ring. NMR studies illustrated that coordination to the NH2bpt ligand was also possible via a nitrogen of the triazole ring and the pyridine ring forming the complex [Rh(phen)2(NH2bpt)](PF6)3. The absorption and emission properties of the complexes studied were found to be π-π* in nature and preliminary evidence suggests that all complexes with the exception of [Rh(phen)2(NHbpt)](PF6)2 and [Rh(bpy)2(NHbpt)](PF6)2 are dual emitting at 77 K.  相似文献

van Kerkhove (2004/this issue) attempts to address an applied animal behavior problem. A cacophony of issues, however, points to the difficulty of understanding and integrating the scientific literature on principles of animal behavior and conditioning (learning theory). The author's primary focus seems to be on the inappropriateness of “wolf-pack theory ”(not a theory at all) to guide treatment programs for the reduction of dog-dog (intraspecific) aggression. During leaf senescence, macromolecule breakdown occurs and nutrients are translocated to support growth of new vegetative tissues, seeds, or other storage organs. In this study, we determined the fatty acid levels and profiles in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), Brachypodium distachyon, and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) leaves during natural senescence. In young leaves, fatty acids represent 4% to 5% of dry weight and approximately 10% of the chemical energy content of the leaf tissues. In all three species, fatty acid levels in leaves began to decline at the onset of leaf senescence and progressively decreased as senescence advanced, resulting in a greater than 80% decline in fatty acids on a dry weight basis. During senescence, Arabidopsis leaves lost 1.6% of fatty acids per day at a rate of 2.1 μg per leaf (0.6 μg mg−1 dry weight). Triacylglycerol levels remained less than 1% of total lipids at all stages. In contrast to glycerolipids, aliphatic surface waxes of Arabidopsis leaves were much more stable, showing only minor reduction during senescence. We also examined three Arabidopsis mutants, acx1acx2, lacs6lacs7, and kat2, which are blocked in enzyme activities of β-oxidation and are defective in lipid mobilization during seed germination. In each case, no major differences in the fatty acid contents of leaves were observed between these mutants and the wild type, indicating that several mutations in β-oxidation that cause reduced breakdown of reserve oil in seeds do not substantially reduce the degradation of fatty acids during leaf senescence.  相似文献
